Overview

COURSE INFORMATION

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is proud to offer the Prechtl’s Basic General Movement Assessment course. Research conducted in the past 20 years has shown that the qualitative assessment of spontaneous movement in the fetus, newborn and young infant is an early and reliable indicator for diagnosis and prognosis of neurological disorders. Compelling evidence shows that Qualitative Assessment of General Movements (GMs) — a specific type of spontaneous movement — under the age of 5 months is the best predictor of cerebral palsy. This course fulfills the standards specified by the General Movements Trust (www.general-movements-trust.info). The course will consist of lessons, demonstrations and discussions of video recordings. Lectures will alternate with exercises in small groups discussing videos prepared by the tutors.

At the end of the course, participants will be required to take a final assessment to achieve a Certificate of Reliability in this method of assessment.

Basic Course

Through lectures, demonstrations and exercises, attendees will learn:

• The ontogeny of spontaneous motor activity;

• Normal and abnormal general movements (GMs) from birth to 20 weeks post-term;

• Practical instructions for recording and assessing GMs;

• GMs and follow-up: individual developmental trajectories and their predictive power for later neurological impairments
