Pediatric Obesity Care: Basics and Beyond

Experts in pediatric obesity care will review current recommendations for assessment and management of obesity and related complications in children and adolescents, including updates in pharmacological and surgical treatment options. We will review the evidence based recommendations and present practical guidance for medical, dietetic, and psychological care.

1. Understand multifactorial etiology of pediatric obesity
2. Understand principle of weight stigma, and learn skills in non-stigmatizing approach to children and families
3. Know when to screen for obesity related complications and appropriate screening measures and referral pathways
4. Become familiar with clinical presentations of genetic forms of obesity, and feel comfortable with determining when to refer for genetic testing or evaluation
5. Understand and feel comfort with delivering, family-based lifestyle counseling for management of childhood obesity
6. Become familiar with current lipid guidelines, when to refer to specialist, and common treatments utilized
7. Know the definition of pre-diabetes, risk factors, prevention and treatment options.
8. Understand the pharmacologic options in pediatric weight management, including efficacy, side effects, and barriers to care
9. Understand eligibility criteria, common methods, efficacy and safety of bariatric surgery.
