CHOP Studio: From Local Insights to Transferable Knowledge: Advancing Scholarship through Program Evaluation and Innovation informed by Design Thinking

Scholarship in health professions education extends beyond traditional research, which aims to generate new knowledge through answering a research question. This 2-day Studio, led by national experts, focuses on program evaluation and innovation informed by design thinking. Scholarship in program evaluation and innovation begins with challenges identified in specific contexts. When built on existing knowledge, theoretically grounded, systematically designed and rigorously executed, these types of scholarship can generate knowledge that not only addresses issues in local contexts but also transferable knowledge for the broader field of health professions education. 

1. Explain how theory supports translation of context-situated scholarship
2. Articulate the varied purposes of and models for program evaluation
3. Practice interpreting evaluation data to inform program improvement
4. Differentiate dimensions of design: design as thinking, as process, and as research
5. Reflect on the distinct values of co-design
6. Apply design thinking approach collaboratively to address a specific educational problem

• $750 for 2 days (external participants)

• $400 for 2 days (CHOP/Penn faculty and staff)

• $200 for 2 days (CHOP/Penn learners, including fellows and PhD candidates)

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
