Overview

Interprofessional Education Grand Rounds

Commitment to change (CTC) science (both its evidence base and its methodologies) is an incredibly efficient and powerful tool for healthcare educators. The evidence base for CTC, generated over 40 years, demonstrates its value in promoting practice change and evaluating educational effectiveness. The gold-standard methodology typically involves learners articulating intended changes following an educational activity, often with a self-rated commitment level, and sometimes includes follow-up to assess implementation. By employing valid CTC strategies, educators have an opportunity to enhance the impact of their continuing education programs by encouraging reflection, fostering a commitment to applying new knowledge and skills, and gaining insights into the translation of learning into practice, ultimately aiming to improve patient care. This session will explore the science of CTC and allow participants to apply CTC in their practice.

Brian S. McGowan, PhD, FACEhp, is currently the Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer at ArcheMedX, Inc., where his research aims to improve the training and performance of healthcare and clinical research professionals. Dr. McGowan earned his Doctorate at Temple University School of Medicine. While at Temple, he served as a member of the Heart Failure and Transplant Teams at Temple University Hospital. Dr. McGowan completed Post-doctoral Fellowships at the Medical University of South Carolina and in Translational Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Prior to co-founding ArcheMedX, he served in medical affairs leadership positions at Cephalon, Wyeth, and Pfizer. He is a Fellow of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (FACEhp), and a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), and the Medical Affairs Professional Society (MAPS).

Upon completion of this live activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the evidence base and core methodology of Commitment to Change (CTC).

  2. Integrate CTC approaches into educational design to promote practice change and improve patient care.
