Qualitative Studio: Token Gesture or Transformative Practice? Reflexivity in HPE Research

This interactive day-long workshop offers participants the opportunity to work with a community of scholars to deepen their understanding of qualitative research methods. Through a combination of didactic presentations from expert qualitative researchers and through small-group activities, participants will be able to work with more advanced approaches to generating and analyzing qualitative data, applying what they have learned both to cases and their own research.

Reflexivity is critical in ensuring the rigor and trustworthiness of qualitative research. Yet rather than being meaningfully and continuously integrated into the research process, reflexivity tends to be reduced to a procedural formality. This workshop aims to address the gap in understanding of, and practical guidance for reflexivity by both (re)examining the role of reflexivity in health professions education research and providing concrete strategies to improve reflexive practices.

 

1. Understand what reflexivity is and how it enhances the rigor of qualitative research.
2. Apply practical tools like reflexive journaling, drawing, and dialogue.
3. Collaborate effectively in reflexivity on research teams.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
