Date & Location
Tuesday, May 4, 2021, 9:00 AM - Wednesday, May 5, 2021, 5:00 PM, Virtual Conference, Philadelphia, PA

Overview

As many as one in seven mothers and one in 10 fathers will experience symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or traumatic stress during the perinatal period. For some parents, the experience of achieving and maintaining pregnancy is largely uneventful, but others may face significant challenges, such as perinatal loss, fetal diagnosis, preterm birth, or hospitalization of their child in a newborn intensive care unit. These events may cause high-risk parents and families to develop a worsening of social and emotional distress. The objective of this conference is to help frontline obstetric, neonatal, fetal and psychosocial clinicians develop culturally sensitive and trauma-informed methods of risk assessment to recognize triggers for psychological distress, foster effective partnerships within multidisciplinary teams, and implement screening and clinical intervention services to support parents and families in need.

A four-hour preconference will highlight best practices for supporting parents and families who experience perinatal and neonatal loss. Members of the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT) Perinatal Palliative Care and Bereavement Program and Neonatal/Infant Intensive Care Team will share their infrastructure for clinical practice, as well as offer guidance for sharing difficult news, helpful grief resources and outreach support for grieving parents and families.

Objectives
Upon completion of this series, participants will be able to:

  1. Preconference: Review strategies to manage difficult conversations when a fetal diagnosis is confirmed and when an anticipated neonatal loss is expected
  2. Preconference: Identify ways to support grieving families in memory making
  3. Preconference: Discuss helpful grief resources for parents and families
  4. Preconference: Recognize the importance of bereavement outreach after parents and families return home
  5. Conference: Define PMADs and understand the prevalence and risks for NICU parents
  6. Conference: Identify key components of risk assessment during a psychosocial interview
  7. Conference:Describe strategies for screening implementation in a fetal center, NICU and neonatal follow-up program
