Qualitative Studio: Reality, Causality, and Pattern

This professional development event supports intermediate & advanced qualitative researchers via a full-day, hands-on workshop that is designed to build research capacity. In this offering, we focus on: Critical Realism and Realist Inquiry

Understanding complex interventions, in clinical or education spaces, requires a philosophy of science that can explain HOW and WHY things work (or don’t work) in different contexts. Participants will engage in discussions and activities to deepen their understanding of critical realism and the mechanisms that drive social reality. Through a combination of didactic presentations and small-group activities, participants will learning about and apply realist inquiry to practice cases and potentially to their own research.

1. Describe core concepts of realism, critical realism, causality, pattern, and pattern theory in the context of social science research
2. Understand the similarities and differences between pattern inquiry and realist inquiry
3. Articulate realist inquiry and pattern inquiry within broader social science traditions
4. Apply concepts and approaches to realist inquiry and pattern in their own scholarly activities

$250 for CHOP/Penn Community Members
$100 for CHOP/Penn Learners (including fellows)
$450 for External Participants (scholarships available)

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
