Cardiology 2020: Annual Update on Pediatric and Congenital Cardiovascular Disease

The practice of pediatric and congenital cardiovascular medicine spans a wide spectrum of care across a wide variety of disciplines. Optimal care not only includes knowledge of proper treatment strategies for the heart disease itself, but also better understandings of the numerous consequences and associated challenges that face the patient and family throughout the lifespan. Our field is still so young and expanding — so many lessons learned, yet so much more to learn, in order to improve the lives of our patients.

With this approach in mind, we present our multidisciplinary comprehensive conference, the 23nd Annual Update on Pediatric and Congenital Cardiovascular Disease. Our theme this year is “Vision 20/20: Lessons from the Past, a Bold Look Toward the Future.” The esteemed course faculty will present multiple talks in plenary sessions, subspecialty breakout sessions, moderated panels of experts, as well as lively discussion groups covering all areas and topics related to the comprehensive care of the unborn, neonate, child and young adult with cardiovascular disease. Through exchange of information, professional networking and effective learning, the goals of this educational conference are to give healthcare providers the tools necessary to create a normal quality and duration of life for individuals with pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease.

1. Describe the science and knowledge base of information that supports clinical practice for the patient with pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease
2. Outline some of the latest innovations and their potential for changing care in pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease
3. Discuss the lessons learned over the past few decades of discovery and the future direction necessary to advance the field of pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease
4. Describe the emerging body of information as well as gaps in knowledge related to patients with a Fontan circulation
5. Appreciate the role of thrombosis in congenital heart disease and its management
6. Learn about the value of child health advocacy in the United States today and acquire the skills to actively participate in improving child health
7. Review the risks and benefits of physical activity in congenital heart disease
8. Discuss the latest concepts in improving outcomes for patients with tetralogy of Fallot
9. Describe the latest strategies and surgical techniques for valve surgery in congenital heart disease
