Overview
This workshop offers participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of theory in qualitative research. Through didactic presentations from expert qualitative researchers and small-group activities, participants will applying different theories to cases and their own research. Participants will engage in discussions and application activities to deepen their understanding of theory and its application to qualitative research. Through a combination of didactic presentations from expert qualitative researchers and through small-group activities, participants will work with a variety of theories, applying what they have learned both to cases and their own research. The targeted audience for this course is faculty (MD, PhD), trainees (fellows, PhD candidates) and staff (research assistants, research coordinators) interested in qualitative research in the field of health professions education, clinical research or public health. By participating in this full day participants can expect to understand and discuss applications of theory to research design, to recognize how theoretical constructs are used and appear in published work, to appreciate differences between theories regarding focus and level of analysis. They can expect to engage in small group work to build understand and to learn how to apply theory to their own (ongoing) qualitative research.
