Overview
Our specialty of pediatric & congenital cardiovascular disease is unique in many ways. Within our discipline, we are charged with serving a myriad of conditions with widely varying anatomies and physiologies at different cycles of time ranging from fetal to mature adult life. At each time frame, each condition is its own entity, demanding a unique fund of knowledge and wisdom specific to that stage of life. This can be a challenge. Maintaining the best outcomes for our patients throughout the lifespan can only be achieved through continuous update and education. Our community must strive to avail itself of the educational resources necessary to maintain and advance the skills and knowledge base required to provide the best outcomes possible. Providing such a communal, multi-center and multi-specialty collaborative, premier resource for healthcare providers and scientists interested in pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease has been the driving mission of our conference for over 25 years! And so, it is with this concept in mind that we present the 26th Annual Update on Pediatric and Congenital Cardiovascular Disease. Our theme is - The Circulation: What Makes the Blood Go ‘Round in Pediatric & Congenital Heart Disease. From the basic principles of William Harvey to the iconoclastic innovations of Francis Fontan and other pioneers, concepts of the human “circulation” are intrinsically fundamental to our practice. The course faculty will present multiple talks in plenary sessions, as well as presentations in subspecialty breakout sessions and a series of moderated case-based panel conversations, covering many areas and topics related to the comprehensive care of the unborn, neonate, child, teen and young adult with cardiovascular disease, all within the context of the circulation. Subject material will cover the right and left ventricles, pulmonary and systemic circulations, characterizing their abnormalities, failures, and treatment strategies, as well as advanced therapies of support.

Objectives
  1. Outline the knowns and unknowns within the knowledge base that informs on how best to understand and care for the patient with pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease.
  2. Explain the methods for acquisition and sources of data and knowledge that currently exist and that need to be further developed to provide the means to offer optimal care for patients with pediatric & congenita cardiovascular disease .
  3. Describe the science and knowledge base of information that supports current state-of-the art clinical practice for the patient with pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease.
  4. Recall the concepts and new strategies of care and practice for conditions unique to cardiovascular disease ranging from the fetus to the adult with congenital heart disease.
  5. Explain the concepts and new strategies of care and practice for systemic conditions outside of the heart which affect the child with cardiovascular disease.
  6. Recognize the unique challenges of the single ventricle and Fontan circulation, their origins and management.
  7. Review the latest approach to advanced cardiac therapies for the failing circulation in the young.
  8. Describe the current tools and methods available for optimal characterization of the cardiovascular system in the young utilizing the latest advanced technologies .
  9. Outline the most recent developments in diagnosis and treatment of lymphatic conditions in the young.
  10. Describe the many conditions affecting myocardial pump function in the young.
  11. Discuss the latest updates on challenges and opportunities in understanding organ dysfunction such as liver disease and kidney disease, when there is congenital heart disease.
  12. Recall the underlying principles and best practices for postoperative care by nurses and other front-line providers for the newborn and infant with congenital heart disease.
  13. Review the strategies of management related to perfusion during open heart surgery in the operating room and during mechanical circulatory support outside of the operating room.
  14. Describe the challenges and opportunities in team building amongst varied specialists and providers to optimally deliver care to the young with cardiovascular disease.
  15. Explain the value of administrative team collaboration in offering optimal healthcare to the community of pediatric & congenital cardiovascular disease.
  16. Discuss the ideal strategies for provider team integration of outpatient community based ambulatory care into the spectrum of cardiac care.
