CHOP Studio - Illuminating Power: Thinking with Critical Theory in Research

Critical theories are useful for interrogating the power relations that permeate our educational environments but can be daunting to apply in research. These theories invite us to consider not only power relations in the contexts we study, but also how we conduct research, why we conduct research, and how we think about the production of research. This workshop will provide participants with a brief history of the development of critical theories, highlighting foundational values and ways of knowing the world; help participants be more comfortable with reading critical theory; and offer an opportunity to apply critical theory concepts to health professions education research design and analysis.

1. Summarize key concepts of at least one critical theorist
2. Compare and contrast different critical theories to determine their applicability for research projects
3. Apply what they have learned about scholarship and theory both to cases and their own work

• $750 for 2 days (external participants)

• $400 for 2 days (CHOP/Penn faculty and staff)

• $200 for 2 days (CHOP/Penn learners, including fellows and PhD candidates)
