Overview
Essential Newborn Care 1 (ENC 1), second edition, is the first part of WHO’s Essential Newborn Care Course. It provides participants with neonatal resuscitation skills and prepares them to train others in the initial steps of neonatal resuscitation. The curriculum, which focuses on The Golden Minute after birth, is specifically designed for low-resource environments and has been shown to significantly reduce neonatal mortality and fresh stillbirths. It includes newborn resuscitation within the Golden Minute, keeping babies warm, promoting exclusive breastfeeding, preventing infection, treating mother and baby with respect, keeping records to help provide the best care. This course was created as a collaboration between the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics, as an update to Helping Babies Breathe.

Objectives
  1. Identify key messages of Essential Newborn Care -1 (ENC-1).
  2. Successfully carry out all the exercises (Preparation, Routine Care for All Babies, The Golden Minute, and Continued Ventilation).
  3. Demonstrate mastery of bag and mask ventilation (skill check)
  4. Successfully complete the written/verbal knowledge check
  5. Demonstrate presentation of ENC-1 content, including key messages from the Facilitator Flip Chart, and incorporation of all the ENC-1 learning materials.
  6. Facilitate small groups learning with participants of various ability levels
  7. Evaluate learner performance
  8. Prepare and supervise participants in continued learning in the workplace
  9. Access ENC-1 resources to plan and evaluate courses
  10. Demonstrates the ability work effectively in teams, and through role play, can demonstrate the facilitation of ENC-1 course content

Registration

The conference will be held in the building on the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care on the main campus of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The registration fee includes continental breakfast, breaks, lunch and syllabus material.

Registration Fee: $275

This is a condensed one-day ENC 1 course, and baseline knowledge in global health is expected. Participants are expected to review the ENC 1 curriculum and pass a multiple choice knowledge exam prior to the start of the course.

Participants are encouraged to purchase the NeoNatalie Newborn Educational Manikins. ENC supplies and manikins will be provided for training use during the course.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
