Overview

Children represent the future of our world. They are tomorrow’s leaders, and their health outcomes today will have a significant effect on our planet’s long-term health and  productivity. Policies that ensure each child has access to quality healthcare are just as crucial as those that promote health by preventing injury, providing access to healthy foods and safe neighborhoods, and alleviating poverty.  Addressing all these factors can greatly improve a child’s long-term potential to live a productive and healthy life.
Conversely, children exposed to adverse childhood experiences are at risk for poor outcomes not only in childhood, but also throughout their lives. For example, studies describe that children exposed to violence, abuse and neglect are more likely to experience depression, inflammation related illnesses and metabolic risks like having high blood pressure and high cholesterol and being overweight into adulthood. Leaders at all levels must prioritize keeping children safe and healthy.
The 2020 12th Annual CHOP Global Health Conference will explore how politics,
governance and leadership affect global child health. In low-, middle- and high-income
countries around the world, these key factors influence health systems in powerful ways and affect healthcare delivery. This meeting will bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts including social scientists, policy, political science and global child health experts to share approaches for working with and within various political systems to positively impact child health. The meeting will also challenge and equip attendees to become advocates for child health within their own systems at the local, national and international levels.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Critically assess the benefits and consequences of different policies on the health and well-being of children
  2. Recall at least two ways in which research can inform policies that improve child health
  3. Identify at least three ways to advocate on behalf of pediatric patients
