Overview

To honor Barbara Schmidt, MD, FRCP(C), MSC, and Haresh Kirpalani, BM, MRCP, FRCP, MSc, CHOP is sponsoring a research symposium in recognition of their retirement. This course is designed to highlight evidence-based medicine and innovative, randomized clinical trials in Neonatology.

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is of increasing importance in neonatal practice. This conference addresses key elements of the design, interpretation and application of innovative randomized clinical trials in Neonatology. The international faculty are distinguished experts in clinical and translational research in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Since EBM has several components, the conference ranges broadly. An early consideration is "What should be the end-points of valid trials?" This topic is addressed by Professor Gordon Guyatt (Canada) who coined the term "EBM" and is a widely cited researcher.

Since both clinical and research work hinges on ethically obtained informed consent, this is discussed in several ways: clinical counseling of parents of extremely preterm infants; building a trusting research relationship; and obtaining consent in emergency delivery room settings.

Objectives
  1. Discuss how current dilemmas in evidence-based medicine in newborn care have evolved
  2. Discuss innovative approaches to parents to obtain informed consent
  3. Apply knowledge from large patient trials to individual patients

Registration

The conference will be held May 9 and 10, 2018, at the Union League of Philadelphia. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The $250 registration fee includes continental breakfast, buffet lunch and program materials.

Accreditation
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education to physicians.
