Carol May RN, MSN, MBA, CHPPN – Carol has worked in palliative care and end of life care for the past 30 years. Currently she is the Director of the Division of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Previously, Carol was the Director at MidMichigan Hospice where she developed an adult based palliative care program. In 2002 she returned to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC to build the Supportive Care Program. Carol is responsible for the administrative aspects of the program as well as clinical care for children with life threatening illness and families. The Supportive Care Program offers palliative care to children with life threatening illnesses and their families. The program provides 24 months of bereavement services to the families and has a defined sibling bereavement program. The Division of Palliative Care and Supportive Care Program includes the Complex Care Clinic and a perinatal program at Magee Women’s Hospital. Carol also provides emotional support to the staff by offering regular debriefing and education opportunities on caring for dying children.
