Melissa (Missy) Duran is a surgical advanced practice provider (APP) in the Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia since 2008, where her primary role is to provide comprehensive care of the neonate/infant requiring surgical intervention from admission, through the perioperative period and continuing through discharge. Since October 2022, she has served as the NeoSurgery APP manager. In total, she has more than 20 years of experience in caring for neonates/infants requiring intensive care. She initially received her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from The Pennsylvania State University. Following graduation, she joined the Peace Corps where she spent 3 ½ years in Honduras. Upon return, she enrolled at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing. She then received her Post-Master’s in Nursing as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner from The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Missy is involved in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives in her institution and nationally. She is actively involved in nursing education, has given numerous presentations and has published in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored a book chapter. In addition, she has had many remarkable learning and teaching opportunities, both locally, nationally and internationally in Honduras, Peru, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Botswana and Guatemala.
