Laughon Clinical Research Conference
I conduct a clinical research conference every other week on Wednesdays from 1-2 PM. In these conferences, trainees present works in progress, we review data/tables/figures for abstracts and manuscripts, and review other topics such as NIH funding mechanisms. We also review aims pages for grant submissions. This is attended by neonatal-perinatal fellows, PICU fellows, Maternal-fetal medicine (OB/GYN) fellows, and UNC medical students, PhDs from the UNC school of pharmacy, and neonatologists at Harvard and CHOP.

UNC Neonatal-Perinatal Research Symposium
June 2021: I organized an international symposium to identify best practices for patent ductus arteriosus trials. This was CME conference and there were 100 attendees. Faculty included Ronald Clyman (UCSF), Willem-Pieter de Boode (Australia), Koert De Waal (Belgium), Tarah Colaizy (Iowa), Aisling Smith (Ireland), Samir Gupta (England).

Clinical Service
Daily Rounds
Each year, I spent a total of 6-12 weeks on service attending in the Newborn Critical Care Center. I teach on formal rounds approximately 2.5 to 3 hours/day.
Night Rounds
Each night that I am on call (in house) in the hospital (approximately once per month), I teach nurse practitioners and residents on formal rounds for approximately 1.5 hours per night. In addition, I teach nurse practitioners and residents about admissions (approximately 1 hour per admission; average number of admissions per night=2) and when there is a sick patient (up to 8-10 hours of direct bedside supervision of procedures and teaching about acute physiology).
Direct Supervision of the Critically Ill Neonate
I directly supervise and teach subspecialty residents, residents, and nurse practitioners about the critically ill neonate including: stabilizing and management of extremely low gestational age newborns (22-27 weeks gestational age), pre- and post-operative care of infants receiving surgery (e.g., gastrostomy tube, tracheostomy tube, intestinal procedures), and infants requiring advance ventilation techniques (e.g. high frequency oscillatory ventilation, high frequency jet ventilation).
Direct Supervision of Procedures
I directly supervise and teach the following procedures for fellows, residents, and interns: intubation, thoracostomy tube placement, central line placement (i.e. umbilical arterial catheter and umbilical venous catheters), thoracentesis, pericardiocentesis, pleurocentesis, etc.
Direct Supervision of Delivery Room Care
I directly supervise and teach subspecialty residents (fellows), residents, and interns of delivery room care and resuscitation ranging from routine newborn care to intubation, chest compressions, emergency central line placement, and the administration of cardiac stimulating medications such as epinephrine.
Supervision of the Pediatric Transport Team
I directly supervise the UNC Air Care Pediatric Transport Team when I am the Medical Control Officer. The UNC Air Care team consists of a nurse and a respiratory therapist.
Fellow Activities
I review and critique condolence letters written by fellows to NCCC families whose infants died in our NICU. I review and critique the death summaries written by NPM Fellows for Morbidity and Mortality conference.
