Dr. Jason C. Woods is a Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonary Medicine), Radiology, and Physics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati.  He is the Director of the Center for Pulmonary Imaging Research and Co-Director of the Cincinnati Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Center.  Dr Woods received his undergraduate degree from Rhodes College and his Ph.D. in physics from Washington University.  After a postdoctoral fellowship in Radiology and Pulmonary Medicine, his early career was split between being a faculty member in Radiology and an Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences, at Washington University.  His research career has been focused on translational imaging research in both obstructive and restrictive lung diseases in pediatrics and adults, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinarity and the connection between imaging and pulmonary pathophysiology.  Hyperpolarized-gas (3He and 129Xe) imaging and multi-volume proton MRI and CT imaging have been the primary modalities for this research, particularly in the use of these techniques to detect and phenotype disease early, measure physiological changes, and test new therapies. A recent focus has been the application of these techniques to chronic lung disease of prematurity in the NICU, where imaging may be able to classify disease with high precision and predict outcomes.
